Dancing in the Streets

Their World: Durham, Durham County

How They Shaped It: Every town looks for different ways to come together as a community and promote a safe and active lifestyle. With this goal in mind, residents of Durham called upon an invigorating Latin American tradition: they opened up the streets and closed off traffic for their inaugural Bull City Summer Streets program.

It was a resounding success, as over 1,100 people came out to celebrate health and safety. Many organizations contributed their services and products to fuel the focus on a healthy lifestyle. Given the overwhelming success, organizers are looking make it an annual event. Bull City Summer Streets is another great step in the city’s efforts to revitalize the community and stimulate people’s focus on safe and healthy lifestyles.

Their Successes:

  • Opening streets for residents: Members of the community came out to walk, bike, skate, jog, and even dance together in the streets of Durham
  • Promoting safety: Attendees received literature and watched demonstrations on bicycle safety.
  • Healthy focus: Companies offered free samples and services to the participants
