Joint-Use Facilities Bridge Community Gaps

Their World: Beaufort County

How They Shaped It: The Beaufort County Health Department and school officials from P.S. Jones Middle and John Small Elementary schools knew that students would benefit from more exercise. Obesity and a general lack of physical activity already affected a staggering percentage of student populations. Better health, however, wasn’t only relevant to students—the community at large needed a safe, stimulating place for pursuing exercise. To solve this problem, the schools created a walking trail the entire community could enjoy.

Their Successes:

  • Secured an Eat Smart, Move More Community Grant for trail planning and construction
  • Addressed signage and liability issues by coordinating with the school board
  • Partnered with the community for input and participation
